The Solar Decathlon is a biannual, international competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to inspire students and faculty to design, build, and operate an entirely solar-powered home. During October 2009, the competition occurs on the National Mall in Washington D.C.

In the 2007 competition, the exposure throughout the world spans over 650 million and it is predicted to reach 1 billion for the 2009 event. Through its visibility and success, the Decathlon promotes solar energy in the eyes of students and the public.
